PUPPY MILL BREEDER/BROKER LIST Okay so you somehow, quite unexpectedly, find yourself staring into the very soulful eyes of the cutest puppy you've ever seen. At a pet store. Somewhere deep in your head, a small voice is screaming RUN AWAY!!!! But the booming voice from your heart is drowning the voice of reason and logic out and you're ready to plop down thousands (literally) on this tiny bundle of happy, healthy joy. But then the brain voice manages to send a morse code signal to another part of your brain which intercepts the transmission and flashes it in front of all other voices - THIS COULD BE A PUPPY MILL DOG! THAT WOULD BE BAD!! Hmmm... How can you protect yourself, your pocketbook, your other pets, your peace of mind from falling victim to the problems of Puppy Mill Puppies? Well, you could do what I did - Just ask! "Did this puppy come from a puppy mill?" Of course, that question will do you absolutely no good as the store will vehemently deny it. And on some level, they're indirectly lying to you. See, while they didn't actually acquire the puppy from the breeder itself, they bought it from a broker/wholesaler like The Hunte Corporation which, coincidentally, is the exclusive supplier of puppies for Petland stores. So you really don't have to wonder if the puppy from Petland came from a puppy mill, you are absolutely assured of it. But, on the off chance you find the salesperson/manager particularly convincing, print out these handy-dandy Class B USDA Certificate/License Holders and/or Class A USDA Certificate/License Holders. See, this list is everybody who is licensed to breed a lot of dogs, broker sales, transport animals, etc. Hunte Corporation is right there on page 11 (Missouri) on the B list. Wow, check out Missouri! Can you believe how many breeders there are? Anyway, I digress.. Ask the Pet Store to please provide you with the breeder's name. That's not asking too much is it? If the store thinks it is, then you need to listen to your brain and tell your heart to shush. There are other puppies, they are a lot cheaper, the breeders can show you the parents, the documentation, the siblings and put you in touch with other buyers. Leave if they won't give you the breeder's name. On the off chance they do give you the name, just whup out your handy-dandy list and look for the name. The state should be on the same paper as the breeder's name, but you can still search. When you match up the name, repeat steps above for when the store won't give you the breeder's name. This is for your own good. Trust me. What follows is a link to a site you should only look at if you really care about animals and really want to know what's the big deal about puppy mills and companies like Hunte Corporation.
